Bird Refuge in Mangawhai
The sand dunes at Mangawhai are an internationally-recognized wildlife refuge for four species of threatened birds - the Fairy Tern, Banded Dotterel, Variable Oystercatcher and Caspian-Tern. Care must be taken during the summer nesting season by those people interested in bird watching. Please contact us at our Waipu Cove camping accommodation for more information on bird watching at Mangawhai.

Waipu River Mouth and Estuary
The Waipu River Mouth and Estuary has international significance and is the nesting area for New Zealand Dotterel, Variable Oyster Catcher and New Zealand Fairy Tern. This nesting area is just a short walk from our Waipu cove holiday park and camping ground. Other species include Reef Heron, Ryebill, Caspian Tern and Banded Dotterel. All are protected, rare or threatened species.

Ruakaka Wildlife Refuge
The Ruakaka Wildlife Refuge is located at the Ruakaka River Mouth. This is a breeding area for New Zealand Dotterel and Variable Oyster Catchers. Ruakaka is a 15 minute drive from Camp Waipu Cove.
