Walks & Hikes in Waipu

There are many great short walks and longer hikes / tramps here in Waipu. Spend the day exploring the stunning Northland landscape and head back to our Waipu Cove holiday park accommodation for a comfortable nights’ stay.

Piroa Falls
A 10 minute walk from the roadside down through a beautiful gorge brings you to the Piroa Falls. There are great freshwater swimming holes here!

Brynderwyn Walkway
The Brynderwyn Walkway is a well-known and very popular Northland tramp from the summit of State Highway One down to Waipu Cove. It takes approximately five hours to walk to the exit on the Mangawhai-Langs Beach Road and is only recommended for experienced trampers and the very fit. 

Ruakaka Estuary Walk
Explore the Ruakaka Estuary on this easy walk. You’ll start at the Ruakaka holiday park, signing in as a visitor. This is a beautiful walk and stunning thing to do in Northland. Your journey takes you around the river mouth and out through the reserve. Mangawhai Surf Beach Walk
To the right, behind the Mangawhai Surf Club, is a path to the top of a hill, with an amazing vantage point. This is a good short walk which gives you unbeatable views of Waipu’s beauty. Rise early while camping at Waipu Cove and watch the sunrise.

Mangawhai Look Out Walkway (By Golf Club)
Take the boardwalk alongside the information map on Molesworth Drive (adjacent to the Mangawhai golf club). This 10 minute walk rewards you with panoramic views over the golf course, Mangawhai Heads area and the surrounding district from the east to west coast. 

Mangawhai Cliffs Walk
This walk begins along Ocean Beach from the Surf Club. With spectacular views of the Hen and Chicken Islands and a beautiful beach at the northern end, this walk provides a great spot to picnic, swim, or snorkel. The walk is about three hours return, maybe longer if the kids want to play along the way! 

Robert Hastie Walkway
This one hour walk begins on the road to Langs Beach, about a 10 minute drive from Mangawhai Heads. You’ll enjoy excellent views of Marsden Point Oil Refinery, the Hen and Chicken Islands and the surrounding countryside.

Mountain Biking
There are some awesome trails and down-hills for adrenalin-junkies in nearby Mangawhai and Whangarei.
